Diamond A Cattle Co

We stopped so early that we were in bed by 7:45. I couldn’t keep my eyes opened.

We were up by 5 and on the road by 6:15. It is cold this morning 19 degrees. We stopped for gas at 6:37. Gas was $3.04 a little more than our last stop. I decided to stink up their bathroom instead of ours. We left at 7:02.

The temperature is still dropping. As the sun comes up at 7:30 it is 16. At 7:40 it is 14 degrees. By 8:17 it is 12 degrees.

We are having to keep the stove top going to stay warm. The windows are icing up on the inside. We have to keep scraping them. The flat Ole hippies are not sure of this.

Frozen windows

Then the sun came out.

The temperature keeps drops 16 to 14 to 12 degrees.

David’s plan of setting the cruise control 65mph is saving us around a gallon a mile.

We stopped to warm up at 9:15. The back heater is working so we can go back there to thaw our feet. I heated up some apple cider. David took Harrison for a nice walk. We left again at 10:08.

We crossed in Minnesota at 10:31. That is seven states now. Then it hit 10 degrees but when we turned west it started to warm up. It is now 18.

At noon it was 25 degrees. We are really having a heat wave now. We stopped to warm up again. It was 28 at 12:42pm. David has this great idea to cover the vents in front with duct tape because they have cold air coming out of them. We get back on the road then.

By 1:15 as we crossed into South Dakota it was 30 degrees. It was also nice in the camper to. That is number eight for us now.

We decided to stay at a Harvest Host tonight. We found one not far from the highway called Diamond A Cattle Company in Pukwana, SD. We got here about 3:40. Found where to park and plug in.

The owner came by when she got back from town. We paid her $20 for the electric. We also got some summer sausage and pemmican that one of her daughters made. That is one of the cool things about Harvest Host.

Harrison was enjoying the outdoors but we enjoyed the beautiful sunset.

We went 498.4 miles today. We will get to see Mount Rushmore tomorrow.

Thanks for stopping by!

Flat Ole Hippies in Gig Harbor

We got to go with our friend to Gig Harbor to take care of her daughter after her foot surgery.DSC_0582

Sarah still has to go for 3 more weeks in her cast with no weight bearing.

Cindy had to do the cooking and cleaning which her son loved because he didn’t have to do it.DSC_0583

We didn’t get to take a picture with her son in law, Steve, because he was gone to work.  Cade was taking his Mom to the airport after she got the kids off to school.

Brodie, Willow and Meadow are such cute and fun kids as you can tell in this last picture.DSC_0586

It was so much fun getting to know some more of Cindy’s family.

We had a great time in Gig Harbor on the Key Peninsula.  Thanks for taking us.

The Flat Ole Hippies Are Off Again

Our friends, the Crewdsons, asked us to go to the Alaska State Fair on Saturday.  We had never been before.

We saw all kinds of things, like little trees, plants that looked like mammoth, tractor pulls, and the record-breaking pumpkin weighing at 1471lbs.

Beer Tasting

As the day went on our sun started to get covered by clouds.  As the people arrived we were deciding where to have the beer tasting, inside or outside.  We finally decided on eating inside and drinking by the fire pit.

I took my brisket off the pit. It had been smoking for 7 to 8 hours.  It looked beautiful.

Flat Ole Hippies Go Camping

Our friends took us camping at Kings River outside of Sutton north of Anchorage, Alaska. We went in their camper.  It was a beautiful weekend. It was sunny but not too hot. We sat by the campfire and went for walks. We enjoyed watching the river.

A good time was had by all.

Flat Ole Hippies Go to the Kenai Peninsula

We went on another road trip with our friends to Sterling and Soldotna with our friends. DSC_0708

We went to visit their son Jared in Sterling.  Boy does he look like a real mountain man living in the woods with his wife.  They even live in a log cabin.

We got to go to the Kenai River too.  There were people fishing but we didn’t see any fish.

Then we met Brodie who is one of their granddaughters.  She was visiting from Washington with her mom, Tiffany.

Brodie even shared her cotton candy with us.

It was a lot of fun visiting Soldotna and Sterling.  Can’t wait to see where we go next.

Flat Ole Hippies Day 4 in Iceland

Once again we are off on another road trip with our friends.  We can’t wait to see where we go today.

DSC_0284

Our first stop was at a lake.

Next we saw a lighthouse.  Could we be going to the beach?

DSC_0314

Yes it was the beach we were going to.

Then we started home and came across this amazing pipeline.

Of course we had to end the day with a couple of beers at the Micro Bar.

Then we went to the tapa bar where we just had a drink while our friends ate.  We do have to watch our figure.

Brennivin

Brennivin is an Icelandic schnapps made from fermented potato pulp and flavoured with caraway seeds. The word brennivín literally translates into burning wine, and it certainly has a strong and distinct taste.

Well we called it a day then.  Looking forward to tomorrow.

Flat Ole Hippies Day 3 in Iceland

We took off with our friends today and they said we were really going to have a great time.  I guess they knew where they were going this time.

We did have a great day! We saw some great rivers and waterfalls, played in the snow, went down a long gravel road, checked out some tomatoes and stopped at a brewery for a couple.

Can’t wait to see what adventure they come up with tomorrow.

Flat Ole Hippies in Iceland

Well we started off this morning with our friends.  We were not sure they knew where they were going but they said, “Sure we do.  We are going to the Golden Circle.”  We never saw a golden circle but we did have a good time.  We headed out on our road trip.  We saw beautiful waterfalls, great scenery, wonderful clouds and drove through a tunnel under a fjord.

When we got back to the apartment we found out that we never did get to the Golden Circle, but fun was had by all anyway.

We then decided to go to downtown Reykjavik and have a beer.

The bartenders were so pleasant that we left them a tip.  Then we all walked home discussing what we would do tomorrow.
