Lake Tobias Wildlife Park

We went with Heather’s family to Lake Tobias Wildlife Park.  We wanted it to  be somewhere that will be safe for all of us from Covid-19.  We went for the self guided walking tour first using social distancing and when in the reptile building we masked up.  The girls are doing well learning to wear their mask.

As we walked to the ticket stand we saw a peacock hanging out in the parking lot.

As we went through the gates we first saw a zebra.

Mammoths, Mammoths, Everywhere!

This was supposed to be the day of seeing new things. Well at least for some of us. Our friends, Steve and Nancy, had told us about this really cool place called Mammoth Site in Hot Springs, South Dakota. Since we were kind of going to be in the area because we were going to Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse we thought we could squeeze it in too.

Well if you have been following along you would have noticed that things don’t seem to always go as planned for us.

Hitting it Hard!

We are getting closer to home and are now just wanting to get there. We want to try to make it to Beaver Creek, the last town before the border, today.

We left Dease Lake around 8:30 and you won’t believe what we saw to start our day off with a little wildlife.

Highway 33 to the Pacific Coast Highway

We left our hotel at 8 but we had to gas up first. The gas is definitely more expensive in California than any where else we have been including Alaska. We also found out that it is cheaper if you pay cash, with a card it was $4.29

Heading to the Heat

David had never been to Lake Havasu City, so I figured we were this close he needed to see the London Bridge.

We left Ajo 10:46 and headed into the heat. We drove through Vicksburg which looked like there was a lot of ranch land. There were tons of feed lots all around. I didn’t expect to go through ranch land.

Day 4 of Our Road Trip

We left Leduc at 8:47 on a beautiful sunny day. By 9:15 we had driven 2057 miles on our trip so far.

Well we finally made it to Calgary where we could pick up our passports. Following the directions I wrote down we went the wrong way. We ended way outside of town. We then thought about going a different way and ended outside of town again. We then stopped and David asked directions. Yes my husband will ask directions. A nice customer got us directions on his phone. He told us we had to drive to the other side of town. After about an hour and a half of circling Calgary we found the Digital Mail which was also FedEx. We now have our passports. Thank you, Lord.

We decide to eat before we head out. We checked out a place called Tim Horton but it was just a fast food and since we are only eating one meal out a day we want something good.

Across the street we see a Fergus and Bix. We decide to eat there. We decide we deserve a beer, so we had a local brew. We ordered gumbo and a sandwich to share. We had keylime pie, which was the greenest one I had ever seen. It was good though and also came with raspberry sorbet.

David dumped 5 gallons of gas in the tank. We then stopped at the gas station and topped off. Away we went at 2:22pm on to Texas.

We arrived at the US border and got across with no problem at 6:03pm. It was great just drove up to the window and off we went.

We gassed up again in Great Falls at 7:46pm. We decided to keep going for awhile before we looked for a hotel.

What we didn’t realize was we were in the middle of ranch country which means miles of nothing. I was starting to think it will be sleeping in the car tonight. Then we came to the little town of Harlowton, Montana right where we changed highways. Right at that corner was the Corral Motel. We pulled into this old motel where David paid $58.85 for our room. It was very small but clean.

There was no wifi at the hotel, so I am writing this on my phone as we travel on. It is taking a while because I can’t type on this thing with my big fingers. Really have you watched how fast these kids can type.

Well thanks for stopping 👋

No Room in the Inn

To start out I will say I have finally got an internet that I can use.  I have to sit in the lobby but maybe I can catch up a little bit before we are off on the bus again.

After the chorus sang mass at St Peter’s we headed to Montecatini.  We stopped at an autogrill to go to the toilette and grab something to eat.  We were approached and asked if we would mind going to another hotel for the night because the one we were supposed to stay in was overbooked.  We said sure.  Sounded like an adventure to us.

We arrived at the Grand Hotel Nizza where we got off the coach and then grabbed our luggage.  Then we were shuffled into a taxi go about 1/2 mile to the Astoria Hotel. When we stepped out of the taxi the spell of the flowers was like a light perfume.  That night we were so tired being that it was midnight that we did not look around much. We took the tiniest elevator I had ever seen up to our room.  Our room was small but very comfortable with a small balcony.  We opened the windows that over looked the quaint little street and off to sleep we went.

The next morning we got up went down stairs to have breakfast.  We ate in the garden taking in the old and friendly charm of the hotel.  As we ate we took in the wonderful smell of the flowers and saw the lemons on the small lemon trees in pots. After breakfast we walked around the hotel taking in the old charm of it.  We then met the owner who told us that he was the fourth generation and his son was going to take over for him soon.  His wife made beautiful flower arrangements all over the hotel.  I would highly recommend this hotel.

I haven’t seen one of these phones in a very long time.

Alice the Chicken Dog

When I say chicken dog I don’t mean that she herds the chickens together or that she eats chickens.  I mean she is afraid of everything.  She is a 100 pounds and is scared of everything.  If you change something in the house she is afraid of it.  She won’t go in the kitchen because that scares her.  She hates going to my daughter’s because of the wood floors also scare her.  We were camping one time and this tiny dog came running out of the grass barking at her and she took off running.  I was out walking her one day in the winter and some other dogs came up to take a sniff.  She took off running and it was icy, so try to guess what happened.  I slide on the ice and fall on the road.  I hit my butt and head.  My glasses go flying off my face which I didn’t know until I got to the park and couldn’t read something. When I got back to the place I fell they had been run over.  She is getting better since she has been out hiking, as far as other dogs are concerned.  We were going down all these steps to go look at the Yukon river and she got halfway down the steps turned, ran back to the van.  On the same trip we stopped at a place to get a closer look at the Yukon River.  There was a really cool bridge you had to walk across.  She didn’t think so, but with David pushing the back-end and me pulling the front end we got her across.  Then going back across she was fine.  Anyway she is still the best dog ever.  I am glad my son, Dusty, is staying at the house to take care of her while we are gone.
