Mammoths, Mammoths, Everywhere!

This was supposed to be the day of seeing new things. Well at least for some of us. Our friends, Steve and Nancy, had told us about this really cool place called Mammoth Site in Hot Springs, South Dakota. Since we were kind of going to be in the area because we were going to Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse we thought we could squeeze it in too.

Well if you have been following along you would have noticed that things don’t seem to always go as planned for us.

Goodbye Montana and Hello Wyoming

I started my morning off by writing my blog I should have written the night before. David had brought me breakfast, so I could get it done before I had a couple of adorable little girls come to visit their Oma.

They were both very concerned about the clock that was blinking. I would have set it but I wasn’t sure what time it was with the Day Light Savings. I now have all our electronics at the right time, including my fitbit which has been wrong since we left Alaska time zone.

Making Time

We started our day once again with Bekka and Kate. They were helping Granpa with the luggage.

Bekka is more involved with playing with Alice’s leash than eating her apple. Kate then managed to get both of theirs.

Dan had said we were going to leave at 9 but we were running a little late it was more like 9:45. This is us as we are getting ready to head out.

The Flat Ole Hippies Are Off Again

Our friends, the Crewdsons, asked us to go to the Alaska State Fair on Saturday.  We had never been before.

We saw all kinds of things, like little trees, plants that looked like mammoth, tractor pulls, and the record-breaking pumpkin weighing at 1471lbs.

Beer Tasting

As the day went on our sun started to get covered by clouds.  As the people arrived we were deciding where to have the beer tasting, inside or outside.  We finally decided on eating inside and drinking by the fire pit.

I took my brisket off the pit. It had been smoking for 7 to 8 hours.  It looked beautiful.

Flat Ole Hippies Go Camping

Our friends took us camping at Kings River outside of Sutton north of Anchorage, Alaska. We went in their camper.  It was a beautiful weekend. It was sunny but not too hot. We sat by the campfire and went for walks. We enjoyed watching the river.

A good time was had by all.

Camping at Kings River

Imagine waking up to the sound of running water and the birds talking. I love waking up this way. Sitting around a morning fire drinking coffee. This is the life for me.

We have been walking the 4 wheeler trails around our camp. I even crossed creeks with one coming almost to my knees. It was cold and helped my heel feel better. I have taken a few shots but will upload the ones from the camera when we get home.

It is so peaceful here. I really enjoy camping. We have gotten older and sleep in a camper. These old hips don’t do ground sleeping any more. Besides you should see me getting up off the ground when you can’t use your knees. Get that butt up in the a and get off the ground.

As far as the diet goes we are sticking to it pretty good. We might be going over on the beer. But what is camping if not beer around the campfire at night. I am cooking lamb chops over the fire tonight and we are having cauliflower salad too.

Even the Flat Ole Hippies came with us.

Well the twins are bringing Mom and Dad out but they had to go to a wedding first. We are going to start the fire, so I can cook, and I am going to say bye for now. I get to check my list now.

Flat Ole Hippies Go to the Kenai Peninsula

We went on another road trip with our friends to Sterling and Soldotna with our friends. DSC_0708

We went to visit their son Jared in Sterling.  Boy does he look like a real mountain man living in the woods with his wife.  They even live in a log cabin.

We got to go to the Kenai River too.  There were people fishing but we didn’t see any fish.

Then we met Brodie who is one of their granddaughters.  She was visiting from Washington with her mom, Tiffany.

Brodie even shared her cotton candy with us.

It was a lot of fun visiting Soldotna and Sterling.  Can’t wait to see where we go next.
